Second-Hand Furniture for the Bedroom
(cue bad orchestral soundtrack)
Starring...
Knotty Pine Robe
I-look-better-in-this-picture-than-in-real-life Cabinet
1950's Mirrored Dresser
Blondie (The Antique Kaurie) Cupboard
Goldie (The Gorgeous!) Gilt Frame
and making their second appearance...
...Boring Shmoring Mattress and Base.
Okay, enough of my silliness :-)
It's true though. I'm gonna attempt to put all that stuff in the same room together and (try to!) make it work - with a bit of TLC and some cute decor I think I may just be able to pull it off!
For me, one of the most fun and rewarding things about decorating is the process of hunting down a collection of bargains and then bringing them all together in an imaginative and harmonious way.
I guess it's like a big puzzle, not one of those glossy thousand piece ones though, it's more like a ten piece kids one with dog-eared corners and even a missing nodule here and there which when put together right, although maybe not perfect, still fits snuggly and tells a story.
Gee, I just read that last sentence back a few times and aside from it maybe sounding just a little too deep :-) it really hit the nail on the head for me.
While I love my home to look and feel nice and inviting, I'm really only a part-time perfectionist and sometimes guess it's important to be happy to take flawed over flawless. Let's face it, nothing's really perfect anyway, is it?
So, whadda you guys think?
I mean, is it lazy to settle for less than spectacular or obsessive to aim for it?
Hmmmm....

Tagged...
katiedid has tagged me.
It's where I tell you all a bit more about myself:-)
1. I had an arranged marriage.
My now husband/then a prospective groom & I decided to get married exactly two & a half hours after meeting each other. We've been married 8 years now & have a 5 year old daughter.
2. I am a self-confessed chai addict. Well, I use that as an excuse to collect loads of interesting ceramic mugs.
3. I am a fruits person. I get very insecure when the fruit-bowl on my dining table gets empty…
4. I have 4 piercings in each ear and one on my nose.
5. I learnt Bharatnatyam for many years and abandoned it to pursue my love for Hindustani classical music to the disappointment of my mother who is fantastic dancer.
6. My handbag is always filled with small biscuit packets, which I give to beggars on traffic signals since I don’t believe in throwing coins at them.
7. I absolutely love traveling by Indian railways, the crowd, the chai-sellers, crying babies, yelling passengers, the loud whistles of the steam engine…that is ‘the real India’!
8. I can eat any number of ‘Gol Guppas/Pani Puris’ an Indian street food.
I now tag...
My Marrakesh, Indigo Blue, Rochambeau, Smosch, Hei Astrid, Anknel and Burblets, the happy living blog, LotusHaus

Tranquil, Wayanad.
I was going through some old photographs from a few years ago and was hit by a huge wave of nostalgia.
We had gone to Wayanad, Kerala for a holiday during the monsoons and stayed at a beautiful home-stay called Tranquil nestled in a private coffee plantation. The lush green surroundings with meticulously maintained garden, the hospitality of the family, homemade jams & jellies, the friendly dogs and those chilly evening conversations with amazing company left us feeling completely warm and fuzzy inside.
What I wanted to share with all of you is the fantastic variety of flora & fauna (eeks, sounds too technical;-) and how the indoor and outdoor spaces blend so beautifully into each other.
Raindrops drenching the bright red petals...
There was a gurgling stream inside the plantation!
A treehouse where we spent hours reading...
Peperomia(?) Plant lovers, help me here:-)
Flowers floating in traditional Kerala Urlis and stone mortar & pestle..
Floating cabbage varieties...
Lovely stand with natural garden accessories...
The open dining area surrounded by lush greenery.
Table set for breakfast, with home-made preserves and jams:-)
Plants curling themselves around pillars & pipes...
Magical chimes on display...
Anthoriums and other exotic plants line the outer wall...
Sigh* Hope all of you liked this Monsoon getaway!
Enjoy the rains.

Rang Decor Readers' Creative Spaces: VII
Today Anaheeta Pinto shares her beautiful home in Bangalore with reader's of Rang Decor.Teak leaves pressed on a plaster of paris wall at the entrance and then removed once dried, gives a beautiful texture and feel
Anaheeta says, "I love stories. I think every moment has the potential to be a story and everything we possess becomes precious if it has a story to tell. Our home is a collection of many wonderful stories that we love to recall and share." Lovely wooden stairs with her Grandmother's wooden plank on the right-side wall.
This antique chair has been restored and upholstered by Anaheeta herself with mirrorwork cutouts and rawsilk upholstery.
Anaheeta says, " The materials we have used in our home are mostly natural: Kota, Jaisalmer, Slate, Terracotta and Wood. We enjoy juxtaposition: old and new, contemporary and traditional, texture and plain....a lot of the way this apartment looks revolves around this evolving contrast."
The painting in the dining room is by Yasala Balaiah.
"For us, our home has been an exciting journey of discovery and it continues to grow fuller with stories and memories that make it the warm, inviting and happy place it is."The blinds in the study are Anaheeta's dupattas from college days.
"An heirloom created by us in our lifetime! This is my all time favourite piece in the house: five precious old sarees that were already in tatters, were gently stripped and rewoven into this stunning tapestry."
An original Parsi Heirloom Cupboard with Belgian Glass and Glass Painting. The Children's Room with circular wall stickers from Japan and decals by Surya Sajnani.
Anaheeta's lovely terrace garden.
Hope all of you enjoyed the lovely space shared by Anaheeta. Anaheeta thanks for sharing this lovely space with us:-)

"Our home reflects our travels, our love for nature and our fascination with all things Indian, traditional, handcrafted and creative. That's the other thing: we don't care for the obvious. Deepak and I enjoy the process of discovering a new use, a new shape, a new colour - so much of what you see in the pictures is our take on looking at the obvious with different eyes, on giving something a little twist and just trying a fresh way of using an old thing...its fun!"

A Starting Point for the Bedroom
I've been meaning to tackle my master bedroom for ages and have half-heartedly been planning a scheme and searching for new goodies to furnish it though for some reason I never had enough motivation to really get stuck in....until NOW!
NOW I seriously can't wait to kickbox the heck outta it - don't feel sorry for it though, it deserves it, trust me.
So, here's the plan:
What'da ya think?
It's a pretty small, irregular space with two doors, one large off-centre window and a built-in robe which takes up one entire wall. Rather than pretend the room's proportionate, I'm gonna play up the asymmetry with some mis-matched furniture though will give balance to the overall scheme through consistency in colour, style and decor. There are a couple of factors which are gonna inevitably influence my design:
Ample Storage
Neutral, Earthy Palette
Light and Comfortable
Slight Eclectic Edge
Clean and Un-cluttered
Nice (that's the response you get when you ask your husband what he'd like!)

Rather than pretend the room's proportionate, I'm gonna play up the asymmetry with some mis-matched furniture though will give balance to the overall scheme through consistency in colour, style and decor. There are a couple of factors which are gonna inevitably influence my design:
Size/Shape of Room
Storage Requirements
Budget
Carpet Must Stay
Need Ceiling Fan (impossible to sleep in Summer without one!)
Require Black-out Window Treatment
Neutral, Earthy Palette
Light and Comfortable
Slight Eclectic Edge
Clean and Un-cluttered
Nice (that's the response you get when you ask your husband what he'd like!)
Now, I gotta apologise cause I don't have any before 'before' photos of the room (as it was when we first moved in). The walls were green, the trim and doors were brown, there was a massively ugly light fixture, worn-out dirty berber carpet and completely see-through bright blue drapes - just lovely.
We got rid of all that pretty quick-smart and here are some pics of the room from about a year ago (cringe, I can't believe I'm putting these out there - please be kind!).
The french window is a lovely feature. We will need to put up some kind of black-out treatment though because the sun streams through in the morning. It's a shame the window ends so near the wall on the left because I can't put in an extra long rod :-(
Please forgive the lack of pillow flair :-)
Okay, now do you see what I mean about it needing its butt kicked?
Honestly though, let's just say those pics weren't taken on its best day.
Unlike my living room, entryway or dining space, where guests usually congregate, the master bedroom is a bit of a hidden lair which is probably why it's been so badly neglected - seriously, "I'm so sorry MB, please forgive me, I promise to make it up to you".
The furniture is all outta my room from when I was still living at home with Mum and Dad - a bit sad, I know, though we had zero dollars just after we bought the house and never really got around to getting anything new (i.e. nice).
We painted the walls Dulux Chalk USA and all the trim and doors gloss white (as per the rest of our house) and although I would have l-u-r-v-e-d floorboards it wasn't to be (not for now anyway) so we put down some nice plush carpet...
...HENCE, a new blank-ish canvas was born!
Soooo, that's my starting point.
I'm dying to hear your thoughts ladies so please comment away!
